A
Murphy bed
is also called a wall bed. As the name implies, a
wall bed is a bed that is stored up against the wall. If you are currently picturing a mattress and boxspring leaning against your wall, however, you’ve got the wrong idea: This type of bed looks like a high-end storage unit.
The way it works is that during the day and whenever you aren’t using it as a bed, the unit simply stands in the room. They usually have shelves, drawers, and cabinets that you can use for whatever you’d like to store in the room. Your storage designer will talk to you about the different options available.
When you have an overnight visitor or someone will be using the bed, the true magic happens! You simply pull down the middle section, and the bed unfolds from the wall. Snap it into place, put clean linens on the mattress (which is the size of any regular bed), and you have a comfortable place for your guest to spend the night. No more pulling out the sleeper sofa or inflating an air mattress, which will be a relief to not only you but your guests as well.
A
Murphy bed
can be installed in any area of the home. Many people the Boulder area have purchased homes with enough bedrooms to accommodate their families but no extra bedroom to use for guests. It’s no problem when you have a custom
Murphy bed
installed.
Some homeowners choose to have a wall bed placed in the
home office. This is a great way to add storage space to the area without taking up much room. When you have visitors, simply allow them to stay in your office overnight. Since the office is often out of the way of the rest of the home, this often works very well.
You could also install a Murphy bed in the playroom, the den, the library, or even the dining room. Anywhere you have extra wall space as well as a way to temporarily make room for the folded-down bed is a great location for placing your new storage unit. Talk to your home organizer to help you settle on the right spot if you are having trouble deciding.
Most of us have slept on temporary beds at one point or another, and most people would not say that they’re particularly comfortable. Sofa beds tend to be lumpy and they have a bar running across them. Air mattresses can be comfortable -- if they stay inflated, which is a risky proposition.
Our
Murphy beds
are as comfortable as a regular bed. They use a mattress that is the same size as a standard bed (you can choose from different sizes). The platform that the mattress rests upon is supportive, too. All of this adds up to a good night’s sleep for anyone who happens to spend the night.
