Smart and Easy Ways to Organize Your Kids’ Closet

Parents are always looking for ways to get their kids’ closets in order, but if there’s one thing I’ve seen in all of my years of renovating home spaces, it’s that it can be incredibly difficult to make changes stick. With that said, there are ways to make even the messiest of kids’ closets organized—and keep them that way. From creating designated storage spaces to making better use of floor storage, color-coordinating, and more, I’ve got the tips you need to organize your little one’s closet.

Here are four smart and easy ways to organize your kids’ closet:

  • Create designated storage spaces
  • Make better use of floor storage
  • Color coordinate and label
  • Invest in a door organizer

Now that I’ve given you the basics, it’s time to dive into the details and put these tips to use.

Create Designated Storage Spaces

The best overhaul in the world won’t stick if your little one doesn’t have clear, designated storage spaces to keep all of their things. I’ve made great use of drawer systems and sliding racks in the past to help differentiate separate areas.

By having a place for all of their foldable clothes, accessories, toys and games, and all the rest, it’ll be that much easier for them to stick to this new structure going into the future.

Make Better Use of Floor Storage

If there’s one constant I’ve seen in all of my years of working on home spaces, it’s that the vast majority of children like to use their closet floor as a catch-all storage space for many of their things.

Instead of constantly trying to fight against this tendency, it’s much better to work with it and to make it functional for them. Make better use of hampers and baskets, and put in place easy-to-access cubbies so they can quickly offload their stuff after school and then grab it all when they need it.

Color Coordinate and Label

As the experts at Better Homes & Gardens explain, one of the best ways to make new organizational systems stick in a kids’ closet is to make them both fun and functional. With that in mind, I’d highly recommend making use of color-coordinated bins and cubbies, and even using labels.

Not only will this make it easier for your little one to keep everything in order over time, but you can also turn it into a fun activity that the two of you do together.

Invest in a Door Organizer

The last (and maybe the most helpful) tip I’ve got when it comes to organizing your kids’ closet is to invest in a good door organizer. With this simple addition to the space, you’ll have the equivalent of entire shelves’ worth of extra space to work with.

What’s better, you can either opt for one with colorful or see-through pockets, making it both easy to separate items based on type, and find them once it comes time to get out the door in the morning.

Conclusion

If there’s one thing I’ve seen over the years, it’s that parents are always struggling to get their kids’ closets in order. But if you follow my super simple tips here (and get a little bit creative in your approach), you’ll be able to get any closet in shape in no time at all.
