How to Switch to Your Winter Wardrobe and Organize Your Denver Closet

Bret Carr • Oct 30, 2019

Old man winter has already begun showing his face here in the Denver area, which means that if you haven’t yet switched out your summer wardrobe for your warm winter wear, you might have been scrambling to find what you needed. Switching out your wardrobe does not have to be a stressful, disorganized event. Read on for some great tips on bringing your winter clothing into your closet without creating chaos and clutter along the way with the help of custom closets.

Work in One Section at a Time

It can be tempting to pull every item out of your closet when switching over to a winter wardrobe, but it is likely that this will create a stressful situation, particularly if you don’t have enough time to devote to completing the entire process in one day. Instead, consider simply pulling out the number of items that you can decide on in 15 to 30 minutes. Working at this clip will keep the project manageable and you will probably be surprised by how much you can accomplish in even small bursts of focused time.

The first time you go to work on your closet, you might not know how much you can do in that short period, so take out only a handful of hangers at a time. On subsequent days, you’ll have a better idea and can remove more at once.

Custom Walk In Closet System

Weed Out Obvious Summer Clothing

There are going to be many items that you can wear year-round (more on that in a minute), but some items, you are simply not going to be wearing in the middle of the winter. Sundresses, shorts, bathing suits, and coverups come to mind. Sandals and flip-flops are other items that you can safely remove from your winter wardrobe. If you are going on vacation to a tropical climate, you can pull these things back out; other than that, say goodbye until spring! Putting all of these items in one place (such as in a plastic drawer that you store under your bed) will make it simple to access them if you do end up traveling to Hawaii or if we get a not-unheard-of very warm day in the middle of March.

Think About Layering

Before you move those short-sleeved shirts to storage, think again: They are great for layering and for the unseasonably warm weather that pops up each year. Better than storing them away is finding a place for them that won’t take up a lot of room in the closet but will still be accessible. A set of drawers mounted below your lowest hanging rod or shelving along one wall will give you plenty of room for these items while still allowing you the space you need to keep your seasonal clothing closer at hand.

Custom Walk In Closet with Double Hanging Space

Make Use of Double-Hung Rods

Your closet organizercan hang rods one under the other to literally double the amount of space that you have for hanging separates. As you go through your items, hang pants on the bottom rod and tops on the top rod. Or you might move all of your summer items (minus long dresses) on the bottom rod while keeping wintertime essentials on the top. You can modify this however you want, but if you don’t already have two rods in your closet, it’s worth looking into.

Find Space for Cool-Weather Accessories

Scarves, gloves, shawls, and other cold-weather accessories should have their own place in your closet. Your Affordable Closets, LLC, closet designer can help you find the perfect solution for storing these items. We have a variety of racks, drawers, hooks, shelves, and other storage equipment.

Store Your Summer Clothes Properly

Once you decide what you are moving out of your closet, you should be sure to store these items properly so they are ready to wear when you take them out of storage next spring. Here are a few tips:

  • Wash the clothing first. Body oils can wreak havoc on fabric when allowed to sit for long periods of time. Wash and fully dry anything you are storing and have non-machinable clothes dry-cleaned.
  • Hang clothes on thick hangers. If you are hanging items, either in your closet, in another closet, or from a rod in your garage or attic, use thick hangers that won’t leave creases in the shoulders or across the knees.
  • Roll clothing rather than folding. If you’re storing clothes in drawers, rolling them will not only allow you to fit more items but will also prevent long-term creases from forming.
  • Use the right containers. Acid-free cardboard or plastic containers lined with a cotton sheet are good bets for keeping clothes insect-free and protected.
