How to Organize Your Home One Room at a Time

Organizing your home may seem like an overwhelming project. By taking it one room at a time and using a little creativity, you'll be surprised at what can be accomplished! Just arm yourself with the necessary tools to knock out clutter for good and conquer home organization!

Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

Declutter The Kitchen

Kitchen Pantry System

The kitchen seems to become the most chaotic room in a home, collecting clutter in drawers, cabinets, and countertops. It’s easier to avoid this situation when there’s a specific place designated for every item.

Lids and Baking Sheets

Begin by creating a space for your food storage containers and lids. Attach a magazine holder to the inside of a cabinet drawer to store all loose lids. The Spruce suggests using two small tension rods to create a rack for storing flat baking sheets, cutting boards, and plates.

Junk Drawers

It’s nearly impossible to get rid of all the junk drawers in your kitchen, but you can bring more order to them with dividers. They will help you keep similar items together. Small containers, such as empty tubs of hand lotion, can be used to keep rubber bands, birthday candles, and the like together.

Kitchen Pantry

Keep your kitchen pantry more organized by sorting items based on food type and expiration date. Use hooks or a curtain rod to hang fresh fruit as a way to prevent bruising. Keep a dry erase board on hand to jot down items that need to be replenished. Before you go shopping, simply snap a picture of the list with your phone.

Beautiful Bathrooms

Bathroom

Keeping the bathrooms clean and tidy can be one of the trickiest parts of organizing any home. Before you can begin organizing these areas, it’s necessary to separate items that can be discarded. There are probably plenty of things in your bathrooms that your family doesn’t need or use.

Medication and Cosmetics

First, sort through medications & look for expired products. Contact your local pharmacy to find out how to discard these items. Throw away old or unused cosmetics as well. Once your stock has been reduced, the remaining medications can be stored together in a plastic container. Store cosmetics in a separate plastic container or box.

Shower and Bath

Gather all bottles of shampoo, conditioner, soap, and other skincare supplies, & store them in a  shower caddy. Choose a style that best matches your bathroom decor.

Junk Drawer

The bathroom is another place where it’s common to find a junk drawer. Again, you can use dividers to create more order. Store cotton balls, nail clippers, and other small items together to keep them from getting lost.

Clear Out The Closets

Custom Closet System

Any closet can become cluttered over time, even when great pains are taken to keep it neat.  If you feel so inclined, research the cost of investing in custom closets. Optimal Garage & Closets Inc. further details What Factors Influence The Cost of Purchasing Custom Closets. In the meantime, periodically sort through your closets and purge items that you no longer need.

Additional tips include:

  • Keep similar items together to find what you need quicker. It might be a good idea to reserve one side of the closet for fall and winter items and the opposite side for spring and summer clothes
  • Arrange your shoes by color or style to make it easier to choose a pair.
  • Keep ties and scarves easily accessible by using curtain rings or a wooden hanger.
  • Organize your jewelry in a variety of different ways. For example, use an ice cube tray to keep track of rings & earrings. A pegboard is ideal for hanging bracelets & necklaces together in one place.

Bedroom Boosts

Bedroom

In much the same way you organized your closets, bringing more order to your bedroom requires getting rid of unwanted items first. Clear off the tops of your nightstands and dressers since these are areas that commonly collect trash, broken items, and other unwanted debris. Then, go through each dresser drawer to get rid of unwanted clothing. Toss or donate anything that’s overly worn or hasn't been worn in the last year.  The clothes you have left should be organized by type.

Fix Up Your Garage

Garage Storage System

The garage tends to become the catch-all storage area for everything from tools to seasonal sports equipment. While this leads to a pretty ugly mess, you can clean it up faster than you might think. Start by clearing out items that don’t belong in an enclosed space, such as paint cans, propane tanks, and other flammable objects. From there, you can begin organizing the equipment and supplies that do belong in your garage.

Gardening Tools

Add a series of hooks to a wall & create an instant gardening area! Use it to store garden hoses, rakes, watering cans, & other lawn care items.

Nails, Screws, and Nuts

Keep hardware supplies together and off the floor by storing them in mason jars. If you have items of varying sizes, store each size in a different jar and label the jars with the size and item type.

Tools and Machinery

Wooden crates can be used to house a series of tools, including wrenches, drill sets, sanders, and other types of machinery.

Keep Play Areas Neat

Kids Closet System

The mess in your children’s play area can cause you to feel tense and frustrated upon sight, but you can help your kids keep it in better condition with a few simple changes. As a general rule, divide their toys by the 80/20 rule. The majority (about 80%) can be placed in the bottom or at the back of the room or area. The remaining 20%, which account for the toys your kiddos play with the most often, can be stored in a more convenient location.  At the same time:

  • Invest in plastic bins for each & every game or set of blocks.
  • Children enjoy creating art, but their supplies often get lost and scattered. Solve that problem by transforming a shower caddy into a one-stop shop for housing art supplies.
  • Transform an old dish rack into a makeshift bookshelf for your kiddos' favorite stories. The silverware compartments can store bookmarks, highlighters, and other supplies.

Create a More Efficient Home Office

Home Office System

Any messy home office can be tied up with just a few simple changes. The first step is to rearrange furniture to maximize space in the room. Once you’ve created more space, you can get creative with the setup of your home office.

  • Use empty food containers to help you keep your office supplies handy.
  • When you receive an important document in the mail, scan it into a file on your computer. You can also request to go paperless with most companies and government agencies. When you do need a paper document, simply print it out.
  • Invest in a movable cart with wheels to house additional office equipment, such as a printer.

Conclusion

When it comes to creating better organization in your home, any room can be improved with a few innovative ideas. For instance, reduce waste by turning used containers into storage for various items. When was the last time you cleaned out your closet or pantry? Do the kids really need 15 sets of blocks?
