Getting the Small Closet System in Your Guest Room Ready for Holiday Visitors

The winter holidays are the most popular in the US, and both Thanksgiving and Christmas are well-known for being huge traveling holidays. If you’re going to have overnight guests stay with you, it’s likely to happen in November or December. This is the time of year when people have to start thinking about getting their spare rooms ready for guests, and that means getting the small closet system ready in the guest room as well.

  • Take the Time to Get Rid of Unneeded Items
  • Combine Like Items to Conserve Space
  • Label Guest Items
  • Add Some Holiday Scents

Take a look at some of the things you can do to ensure that the small closet system in your guest room is ready for your visitors.

Take the Time to Get Rid of Unneeded Items

Understandably, the spare room closet becomes storage space for items that don’t seem to belong in any other place. It’s right there, it’s not being used, and you need to clean up, so why not? The problem is, the closet system can quickly become overrun by things that aren’t helpful to a guest. When you’re preparing for holiday visitors, the first thing you need to do is clear out the clutter and see what you can get rid of.

Start by taking everything out of the closet. You can handle this the same way that you would handle cleaning a bedroom closet. Sort things into three piles: items you want to keep, items you want to donate, and items you want to throw away. The garbage pile can be disposed of quickly. Put the donatable items into bags or bins and move them to the garage or straight to your car so they can be dropped off sooner rather than later.

Once that’s done, return your attention to the “keep” pile. Can you break it down further into things you’re keeping in the closet and items that can be kept someplace else? If so, do that and remove items that belong elsewhere in the house. Now you should have fewer things to put away, which will leave more closet space for your guests.

Combine Like Items to Conserve Space

When returning items to the closet, don’t just toss items anywhere. You’ll save space if you’re putting like things together. So, if the spare room closet is where all your old board and card games live, don’t spread them out on the shelves. Stack them neatly in one place instead.

You’re trying to leave space for your guest to use the closet, remember. That doesn’t mean you can’t keep things in that closet – your guest probably doesn’t need room for a whole wardrobe unless their stay is meant to be very long-term – but you do want them to have some shelf space and other types of space to use. Push stored off-season clothes to the far side of the hanging rod – you can spread them back out later after your guest leaves if you like. This way, you’re leaving room for your guest to hang their own clothes in a convenient space.

Label Guest Items

You probably want to leave some things for your guests to use, such as a set (or more) of towels, hand towels, toiletries, extra sheets and blankets, and extra pillows. This is a great thing to do as it allows your guests to get what they need without feeling like they need to be a bother about it. However, just leaving these items in the spare room closet doesn’t necessarily let guests know for sure that those items are meant for them, especially if you’re also storing spare blankets or sheets, or towels for other household members in the same closet.

Make it easy on them by including labels. They don’t have to be fancy – though they can be if you want – just tie a ribbon around a set of sheets and slide in an index card that says “spare sheets for Mom and Dad” (or whoever is staying in your guest room). That way they know exactly what’s for them without having to worry about asking every time.

Add Some Holiday Scents

If your guest room closet doesn’t get used often, the air inside can smell a bit stale. You can improve the scent for your guests by adding some good-smelling sachets. You can buy them, but if you have the time and inclination, making your own can be a thoughtful gesture.

According to The Upside, you can make your own Christmas tree-scented sachet with just a few ingredients: dried rosemary leaves, fir needle essential oil, and pine needle essential oil. This kind of small personal touch not only adds a pleasant scent to your guest closet and makes the whole room seem more welcoming, but it also makes guests feel valued because you took the extra steps to make your space more appealing for them.

Conclusion

The holiday season is a time for guests, which means that it’s time to make space for them and make your home more welcoming. Cleaning out the guest room closet and preparing it for your visitors is an important part of that.
